Double Chin Reduction

How is a double chin treated?

Injections of a prescription medication is used to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called double chin.

How does it work?

A synthetic formulation of a substance found naturally occurring in the body is used to break down and absorb fat. When properly injected, the formulation has been shown to dissolve fat that causes a double chin. The result is a more streamlined and improved contour along the jaw line.

What other options exist to reduce submental fat?

Prior to the introduction of this prescription medication, the only effective options to treat submental fat were surgical. Injection of the synthetic formulation is the only non-surgical option proven to treat a double chin.

How many treatments does it take?

Injections into the fat under the chin are administered through a series of treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The treatment plan is tailored to meet the individual needs of the patient. We recommend at least 2 treatments although the total number of treatments can vary based on a myriad of factors.

Is there any downtime?

There is swelling following the injections which typically resolves within 24-48 hours but can last up to a week. Bruising can occur at the injection sites but is usually minor and can be covered easily with makeup.

What are the possible side effects?

Serious side effects including nerve injury in the jaw (which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness) or trouble swallowing may occur. The most common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

Who should not receive the treatment?

  • Patients who have an infection in the treatment area
  • Patients who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if the injections will harm an unborn baby)
  • Patient who are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if the injections pass into breast milk)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

What is platelet rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelet rich plasma is the portion of blood which contains a high concentration of platelets. Platelets stimulate the release of growth factors which assist in collagen regeneration. Increasing the collagen in your skin means over time your skin will appear more rejuvenated, smoother, firmer, younger, and fresher looking.

Is PRP safe?

Because PRP treatment uses your own blood, the risk of immunological reactions or contamination with transmissible diseases is eliminated.

What does the procedure involve?

8-24ml of your blood is collected in a similar way to a blood test. The blood is spun down in a centrifuge using a specially designed tube that separates the PRP from the red blood cells. The PRP portion of the tube is then drawn up into a syringe ready for re-injection and/or microneedlinginto the skin.
Topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin prior to injection or microneedling to keep discomfort to a minimum.

What can I expect following my PRP treatment?

There is very little to no downtime following a PRP treatment. Injections can cause minor bruising and swelling. Some patients report a tingling sensation after injection.

How many treatments do I need?

Typically, we recommend 3 PRP treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Some patients may need up to 6 treatments.

When will I see results?

Typically first results are visible 2 weeks after the first treatment and full results around 3 months after the final treatment.

Skin Microneedling

What is microneedling?

Microneedling offers unparalleled collagen induction by harnessing the body’s innate ability to re-grow and repair the skin as a response to damage. A small, hand-held device delivers over 1000 micro-punctures per second into the skin causing a controlled skin injury thus stimulating the skin to produce collagen. The process generates new healthy skin cells to replace aged or damaged ones and can improve the appearance of:

  • fine lines
  • wrinkles
  • surgical, acne, and trauma scars
  • stretch marks
  • pigmentation

In addition, microneedling is a fantastic drug delivery device. Any product applied to the skin during or immediately after a microneedling treatment is very easily absorbed into the skin rendering it much more effective than with a traditional topical application.

How many treatments are recommended?

Generally, 4-6 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart are recommended for optimal results. Some patients may require additional treatments.

How long should it take before I see results?

Typically, you will see results after the first treatment. Lasting and more significant results will occur after 4 to 6 treatments. Your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments.

Is the treatment painful?

For minimum needle depths microneedling treatments are painless. Treatments over 0.5mm deep may require a topical anesthetic cream to be applied for several minutes before the procedure. This will render the treatments virtually pain free.

Is there any downtime after treatments?

Generally no, but you may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after the treatment. Patients are able to apply makeup after the procdure to cover any redness.

How soon after filler injections can I have a microneedling treatment?

It is recommended to wait at least 7 days after filler injections so that any post treatment bruising from the fillers can resolve. It is also possible to have your microneedlingtreatment several days before having fillers injected.
